 SEIU Sends Letter to Senate with Healthcare Reform Priorities Update on Miami-Dade County Budget The Miami-Dade County Commission passed a budget in the early morning hours of Sept. 18 that calls for a 5 percent salary cut for county employees. Some of our members boarded buses on Saturday, Aug. 29 to travel to Orlando for a statewide healthcare reform rally and action day. 
VICTORY FOR STEPHANIE MAIR!! Our president Martha Baker, RN, has reached a settlement agreement with JHS President and CEO Eneida Roldan, rescinding Stephanie Mair’s termination. Due to this great news, the rally planned for Wednesday, Aug. 26, has been cancelled. 
Valdera Blocks Safe Staffing Ratios Safe nurse-patient staffing ratios are a critical part of any health care system. But Trummel Valdera, Vice President of Human Resources, has ordered the PHT to block instituting the safe staffing ratios policy.
SEIU Local 1991 Members Speak out to Save Jackson Clinics SEIU Local 1991 members raised questions at a town hall meeting hosted by Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan regarding the proposed turning over of Jackson Memorial Hospital’s primary-care centers to federally qualified health care clinics. To read more about it, click here. In Memoriam SEIU 1991 is saddened to report the passing of Sheryl Pettitt, the much beloved and respected former Executive Director of our Local. She passed away at home among friends and family on August 3 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was an extraordinary woman and dynamic leader who touched many lives. A memorial to celebrate her life will be held on Oct. 2 at Jackson Memorial Hospital, DTC 270 at 7:30 to 9 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m.

County Commission Unanimously Approves Contract! On December 16, the County Commission voted 12-0 in favor of approving the new contracts for RNs and Professionals. Members turned out in record number on December 8th and 9th to overwhelmingly approve our new three-year, groundbreaking contract. Nurses ratified their contract with a 96% yes vote, while Professionals ratified their contract with 97% yes vote. In these hard economic times we fought off all contract take-aways and won on safe staffing by standing united and strong. United We Won! (read more) Union Stands Up for CHEMO Safety at JHS SEIU 1991's fight to improve health and safety issues related to chemotherapy is moving forward. At our request, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted an in-depth investigation of chemotherapy drugs exposure at Jackson.
